The article on Wiggins blog “A veteran teacher turned coach shadows 2 students for 2 days – a sobering lesson learned” was very inspiring and made me think about my classroom experience and how I want to model my classroom in the future. When I was in school, I did exactly what the author talked about: I sat and I was exhausted. We never really got up and moved around. We had block schedule too, so we had 2 hours per class to just sit there and learn and do our work. Also, we never had much discussion in the class. The teacher was the only one who was giving us information and we were just gathering it. I know I was able to learn most of the information, but a lot of it did not sink in. I know that if we had worked together in more groups or had classroom debates and discussions, the information would have sunk in deeper and I would have been able to apply the knowledge. Some teachers seem to lose sight of what it is like to be a student. I know there are a million other things to focus on in the day, but the teachers need to make sure they understand how the students are going to feel when they are doing the assignment or listening to the lecture that is being given.I plan on changing all of this in my classroom. I want my students to be doing group work and arguing their ideas and points to an audience that can rebuttal or support them. I want my students to feel like they have control of their education more than just sitting back and listening to me blab to them about what I think is important. Of course, I know that there is information that they need, but I want to teach it to them in a way that they actually absorb it.I really enjoyed this blog!
