I believe that I stand with the “old school” standpoint just because that I s what I am used to from my experience in schools. However, the “new school” standpoint has a lot of good points. Using technology as a tool of discover is very important. Students should be given the freedom to go out and find the information that will help them develop an understanding of the entire subject they are studying. I also agree with the idea that the students do not necessarily need to come to school in order to learn some of the information that we feed them in school. There are plenty of other ways to learn about key events, but students need to be taught how to read the sources and how to analyze them and really get something out of them.
I think I could really implement all 6 of the different ideas. However, I think numbers two and three were the ones that I most connected with. Number two talks about High Tech High, and I am actually doing my co-teaching at the middle school there. Seeing this idea in action is really inspiring because the students are extremely capable of leading their own learning and discovering the lessons and content. This works a lot better than the teacher droning on in front of the class lecturing because they are actually working the issues out for themselves. And number three I can get behind because if you connect your students to the right forums on the Internet, they can learn a great deal. Just like we are using the different education hashtags on twitter in order to connect with educators all around the world, students can do the same thing to enhance their learning. Each and every one of these ideas can help in the classroom to benefit the students.
