I definitely agree with Dr. Michael Wesch pretty much completely. Right after watching his Ted Talk, I watched the “A Vision of Students Today” video that his class put together. The fact that it has five million views worldwide and has been translated into several different languages is mind blowing. It completely shows his point about how the Internet has created this platform for all people to get their message out and to share their thoughts and ideas with others around the world. With two billion people actively using the Internet, there is a large audience out there to connect with.
At the beginning of his lecture, he showed a picture of his classroom that shoed how unengaged they were in what they were learning. He revealed the most prominent questions that are asked of him during classes: How many points is this worth? What do we need to know for the test? Etc. He talked about how this represents the level of engagement that the students have in the class. To go from knowledgeable to knowledge-able they must go from just learning a bunch of “stuff” and information to find, sort, analyze, criticize, and soon create information on their own.
Dr. Wesch talked about how the introduction of the television developed this new means of communication and changed how people were living their lives. With the one-way conversations of television, conversations were being controlled by the few and designed for the masses. This led to the time of the Internet and how people are able to create these viral videos that people around the world are seeing, copying, talking about, etc. They are connecting, organizing, sharing, collecting, collaborating, and publishing their thoughts and ideas.
This video was really an eye opening experience. Technology is all around us and can be used in many different ways in order to help students expand their knowledge ability.
